MISURINA

The best-known community within the Auronzo township is without doubt Misurina , whose green territory was fought over by Dobbiaco and Auronzo, which finally won possession over it in the mid-18th century. Indeed, in order to defend this outlying tract of Cadore from enemy attacks a wood barrier (spalto) was built between the Popena and the Piana mountains. Misurina is reached from Cortina through the Passo Tre Croci ("Three Crosses Pass"), from Auronzo through Val d'Ansiei, and from Val Pusteria via Carbonin along State Highway 48a ("SS 48 bis"). The romantic lake, about 1,000m long and 300m wide, is situated at 1,765m above sea level in one of the most solemn and majestic alpine hollows, surrounded by dark woods and by the immaculate, sheer Dolomite peaks of Piz Popena, Cristallino, Tre Cime di Lavaredo ("Three Peaks of Lavaredo"), Sorapìss (with its glacier), Cadini and Marmarole. Ever since it was "discovered" in the early decades of the 19th century by English and German travellers, Misurina has been attracting waves of tourists from around the world. The town's hotels, reflect ed reflected in the lake, help make it a popular health resort as well as a winter-sports centre. Mountain lovers are presented with a wide variety of possible activities: there are the wide plains and moderate inclines, fast ski slopes, breathtaking panoramic views, tour of the lake on foot or by boat, traversing and climbing in a landscape of incomparable beauty. Other suggested tours are a ride on the chair-lift up the Col de Varda (2,400m), which offers a magnificent view of the Cristallo Mountains; a climb up Mount Piana (the scene of massacres during the First World War, invoked at the sight of the Bosi Lodging); and, most of all, a tour of the Tre Cime ("Three Peaks"), climbing up to the Auronzo Lodging, which may also be reached by car on a paved toll-road.
