A LITTLE HISTORY |
|
Ancient peoples such as the Piceni and Etruscans settled in this region. In Roman times and in the Middle Ages, the Marches were the theatre of almost uninterrupted warfare and fighting: first during the Roman Empire, then came the time of the barbaric invasions, the first and second millennium, the late Middle Ages, the Communes and the first Seigneuries, the Renaissance, the Jacobinic period, the relationships with the Papal State and Rome up until the Unification of Italy. All this historic past las left traces that can be clearly seen: among the Romanesque ruins of Urbisaglia, the splendours of Urbino and the whole Montefeltro area, as far as Camerino, San Severino, Macerata and Fermo. The architectural outlook of the towns and the rural areas change together, maintaining unity and balance, and it is this eternal equilibrium, this sense of proportion and circumspection that you can still feel in the air. Castelli and Gradara, Caldarola, Montefiore, Montefalcone and strongholds such as Offagna, Sant'Agata Feltria, Sassocorvaro, Mondavio, Arquata, Porto San Giorgio, map out an ideal historic itinerary that includes the often impenetrable face of the inland areas, areas that might seem just as isolated today as they were in past centuries, but which are in fact the natural reserve of culture, the arts, the work and specific character of the people of the Marches. A people that is and was one of sailors (at Fano, Senigallia, Ancona, San Benedetto), but whose origin lies in the land which gives strength and constancy to follow the road ahead.
