STONES

As a border land, Polesine combines elements of different cultures, adopting the analogies and affinities of each, though still clearly showing its own traditions and irreconcilability.

Proof of these characteristics is to be seen in many buildings found throughout the territory. Stones in different shapes and colours, recording the slow passing of time, the rhythms of the season and work, the smiles and tears of generations.

Polesine illustrates the passing of different civilizations: from Roman brick to the farms lost in the middle of a flat, monotonous countryside, from the brick kilns (a tradition that goes back to antiquity) to the abandoned water-scooping machines (the last remnant of the long season of the reclamation work) and the farm houses.

But there are also the remains of Mediaeval walls and castle, monasteries and churches, old rural complexes, town buildings, large courts, rows of houses with arcades along the edge of a canal, suggesting the long rule of Venice that left its mark on tradition.
