ENVIRONMENT

People usually divide Polesine into three parts - upper, middle and lower - almost as if to confirm that it has three different characters.

Upper Polesine therefore appears as a fertile, intensely farmed countryside, with large towns standing close to the river Po, but also the river Adige and the Canalbianco.

The countryside in Middle Polesine is more irregular and broken, with frequent villages and towns. Fields stretching into the far distance all the way to the sea, fewer villages and the Po Delta are the most typical aspect of Lower Polesine.

In actual fact these differences, which find their parallel in history and civilization, agree with the reclamation campaigns carried out on the plain in its haste to reach the sea.

An environment which is morphologically consistent in its variety, but which changes completely at the end, where the Po Delta forms an ecosystem unique in its kind, even though it is not unlike the major wetlands in Europe.
