FROM NUORO TO SAN TEODORO

Nuoro is the capital of the Barbagia area and of cultural traditions. It is the administrative and commercial centre and the home of the Nobel prize-winner for literature, Grazia Deledda, of the sculptor Francesco Ciusa (winner of a Biennial Exhibition in Venice), of the poet Sebastiano Satta and of the magistrate and writer Salvatore Satta. Places worth visiting include the Museum of Life and Traditions, the monumental square designed by the unforgettable artist Costantino Nivola, the bronze statue of the Redeemer on the Ortobene, the little churches of the Solitudine and of San Carlo which contain the mortal remains of Grazia Deledda and Francesco Ciusa, and the birthplace of the Nobel prize-winner.

As an ideal itinerary we can start off from Oliena, ten kilometres from Nuoro, famous for the splendid costume worn by its women with extraordinary colours and fine gold brocades and for the quality of its wines. Orgosolo: frescoed with interesting "murals". We can admire incomparable moon-like landscapes and centuries-old forests on the Supramonte, where mouflons and Grifon vultures still live. Shepherds too still live in this microcosm, sheltering in their conical cabins made with trunks of ancient juniper. Dorgali is rich in artistic and craft traditions. "Serra Orrios" and the Giants' Tomb of "S'ena'e Thomes" are the most significant traces of its past history.

No one should fail to visit the beach at Cala Gonone, quite rightly considered one of the most beautiful in the world. The caves of "Inspinigoli" on the landward side and that of the "Bue Marino" or Sea Ox on the coast make up the most splendid group of caves in the Mediterranean area. The last examples of the monk seal have survived in the latter. The whole landscape of the coastal strip, as far as Santa Maria Navarrese and Arbatax, is indescribably beautiful. It is an absolute heaven for underwater fishermen and for photography lovers both under and over the water. From Capo Monte Santo to Cala Gonone, Orosei, the cove of Siniscola, Budoni and San Teodoro, the coast offers dream-like visions with an emerald green sea, considered to be among the cleanest and most transparent in Italy. A paradise for holiday-makers.
