THE NATURE

There are over fifty hectares of woods full of unspoilt nature: an extraordinary ecological heritage where we find the last specimens of Macedonian oak in the whole of Italy. Not only Macedonian oak but also majestic holm oaks, delicate pubescent oaks and splendid orchids, all strictly protected, form the largest green lung in the whole region. The wood of "Chianelle", which is the largest, stands at a height ranging from 343 to 886 metres above sea level, dominating the Ionian. From the tallest points (Monte Pianelle, Cordo della Strega, Belvedere del Vuolo), we can admire the mountains of Calabria.

We look out over a landscape where nature shows all its beauty and richness and our gaze crosses the bounds of infinity. But as well as this fine green countryside there are also splendid caves, such as the ones at Nove Casedde, Pilone, Vuolo and Gravine and lots of caverns which in the nineteenth century provided an ideal refuge for the brigands who infested this area for over a decade.

Legendary bandits, often helped by Bourbon agents, used to gather here with their bands of men before setting out on raids into the territory of Salento.
