WHAT TO SEE

In the stony landscape the fortified farms are an authentic element of the architectural heritage.Visiting one of them today is like entering another world, stepping back into a distant past that is nevertheless still very much alive. The main residential part was mostly in the centre of a large courtyard surrounded by high walls, or in a real tower with clearly defensive purposes. Some still have sentry boxes, drawbridges and embrasures, underground oil presses, wells and stone-flagged threshing floors. Between the sea horizon and the blue of the sky mute and solitary, stand the towers along the shores of Salento. The south-east winds whip them in winter but they resist with out yielding. They were built as defence works and watch towers to look out for enemy armies in the mid sixteenth century (1567-68). They all have a square plan and the form of a truncated pyramid. On the Adriatic shore we can see the towers of Specchia Ruggeri, San Foca, Roca Vecchia, Torre dell'Orso, Sant'Andrea and Salignano. On the Ionian coast the Torre Pali and Torre Vado, then Torre Mozza, Torre SUda, Torre Sabea and Torre S. Isidoro.
