TRADITIONS

There are many events in costume, illustrating episodes and traditions of the past. These have been transformed into celebrations and have become annual events.Mondolfo, which was famous for its champions of "pallone al bracciale", a kind of ball game, which is enacled in the "La Cacciata" and Mondavio has its 40 years old "La Caccia al Cinghiale" (the wild boar chase) with a parade of historical archers and evening festivities in costume.Cagli has the "Palio dell'Oca" and Cantiano re-evocates the period of the flagellants, repeating the rites of Good Friday with "La Turba".

Many other festivals and events are not connected so much to tradition but to popular convivial entertainment, like the "Spaghettata di Quaresima" in Mondolfo, the "Sagra dei garagoj" in Marotta, the "Sagra delle Lumache" a Pianello di Cagli, the "Sagra della Polenta" at San Costanzo. The "Sagra del polentone alla Carbonara" in Piobbico (linked to the traditional "Processione delle Rocche") the "Sagra del Bostrengo" in Apecchio the festival "Vincisgrasso" is at Cartoceto which also boats a highly, esteemed olive and olie oil exhibition. Acqualagnais the largest Italian commercial centre specialized for truffles and has a Truffle Exhibition-Market, Cantiano holds the Regional Horse Exhibition. But the festivals continue and we can say that every village has its own, all for different reasons; sometimes it can be for a message of fertility for the land or thanks for a particular event or to underline particular customs and daily habits.
