FORTRESSES AND CASTLES

The most outstanding feature of our hinterland centres, is the position; mostly on top of hillsides and spread across the whole of the area, thus forming an almost unique defensive system in the history of architecture.
Many of the fortresses have disappeared and of others only a few ruins remain, as may be seen in Fossombrone, Pergola, Mondolfo, Cagli, and San Costanzo. The imposing Roveresca fortress in Mondavio, instead, still stands, in its original design by Francesco di Giorgio Martini. The building houses a historical museum, and an interesting collection of weapons. Another interesting place to visit, although only part thereof is open to the public, is the Brancaleoni castle in Piobbico, decorated with stucco work by Brandani and frescoed walls.

The Conti della Porta castle in Frontone has a rather unusual feature - it seems to be ploughing a make-believe sea, with the outcrop resembling a ship's prow. In Cagli, the semi-circular Torrione still emanates the indomitable force which the destroyed fortress must have had in the past. This is also one of Francesco di Giorgio Martini's works. In a panoramic position, between Acqualagna and Piobbico, lies the iron-grey castle of Naro.
