DISCOVERING MUSEUMS AND COLLECTIONS






Those who are looking for art and culture during their holidays can form an itinerary comprising visits to museum and libraries, certain of discovering small places, testimonies, and structures and unexpected surprises.

Therefore, let us proceed in alphabetical order: Apecchio: in the Palazzo degli Ubaldini there is permanent exhibition of "Fossils and Minerals from Monte Nerone".
Cagli: the 14th century Palazzo Comunale, in the main square, house an exhibition of archaeological remains, sculptures, furniture and other objects of interest.
Fossombrone: the Vernarecci town museum, housed in the summer residence of the Montefeltro family, display archaeological remains, statuary, coats of arms and examples of the local economy. In the town's picture gallery there are paintings by Ridolfi Barocci, and others and in the Passionei Library there are collections of designs and etchings (amongst which are works by Dürer, Giulio Romano, and Callot).The Modern Art Gallery (Galleria d'Arte Moderna) "Cesarini" is of special interest with Italian works of art of the 20th century.
Mondavio: The Rocca (Fortress) houses a series of historical scenes, a type of waxworks museum and in the armoury there is an exhibition of sidearms and medium range and semi-portable artillery - both originals and models.
Pergola: has a town museum and picture gallery. Of particular interest is its collection of fossils donated by the geologist Father Raffaello Piccini, preserved in the local high school. The famous gilded Bronzes of Cartoceto were found, exhibited and... locked away again here.
Piobbico: has an interesting collection of fossils and stuffed local fauna, encompassed under the Nature Museum temporarily housed in the Town Hall and awaiting more table premises. In the Palazzo della Rovere in S. Lorenzo in Campo there is an archaeological museum which exhibits Etruscan remains i.c. ceramics, bronzes etc. as well as findings from the archaeological diggings at Suasa. There is also the Museo Etnografico Africano (African Ethnographical Museum)with material from Sierra Leone, of great anthropological interest, often visited by school groups. Not to be overlooked is the Biblioteca Alighieri (Alighieri Library) with its vast collection of all the editions of Dante Alighieri's works testifying to the spirituality and centre of culture of the glorious hermitage of Fonte Avellana, where Dante was a guest and which he recorded in his XX canto of Paradise.
