Fano is a sea-side town with all the advantages of a small simple town. The old nucleus and the new part join to offer an atmosphere of welcoming friendliness. There are two beaches: the west beach: The "Lido" has wide, fine, arch-shaped sandy beaches. The east beach: "Sassonia" draws its name from the pebbled beach which is over 1 kilometre long, and has all the most modern equipment. The two beaches are separated by the portcanal. On the banks are the fishermens' houses. The port houses many pleasure boats and there are many fishing boats at anchor. (The Fano port is amongst the best on the Adriatic Coast). In the port the daily eatch is a colourful event, the first invitation to gastronomy based on "grilled foods" ("rostite"), sea-food stews, ravioli with fillets of sole, country-style calamari, and "scottadito" (grilled) sardines. The port also houses a few shipyards in which caulkers build fishing vessels or pleasure boats, the Fishing and Marine Biology Laboratory is also found here, as is the small Museum of the Sea and large Aquarium.
