LAND AND SEA

Senigallia is easy to reach. We can drive in from the motorway, from the nearby airport at Ancona, or moor directly in the well-appointed tourist harbour. Then there is the railway station too. This explains the town's double attraction. On one side the sea, clean and sparkling, its shallow waters lapping the edge of the finest beach of velvety sand in the Adriatic: a broad golden rim broken only by the quays of the port and the unique Rotonda by the sea. On the other side are the mighty walls of the Rocca, the fortress of the Della Rovere family, which conceals the remains of the oldest settlement, the ancient heart of the town. Beyond the Rocca lies the old town centre. Its finest gems are Palazzetto Baviera, the Church of the Cross with its exquisite Baroque architecture, Palazzo Mastai where Pope Pius IX was born, and the Diocesan Picture Gallery. The duty-free fair that used to attract people and goods from all over the Levant was once held in the squares and along the river Misa; since that time Senigallia has preserved the character of a town open to meetings and trade. From the fair it inherited its vocation for tourism, the exchange of cultures and experiences between the peoples of Europe, especially the German-speaking areas, and its intense activity as a congress centre, for which it can rely on the first-class facilities offered by its more than one hundred hotels. All along the coast there are a great many sports and recreation facilities: from tennis to bowling, from indoor swimming pools to horse riding, from discos to open-air life.
