Civitavecchia is not only memories and history, but also an attractive town with a temperate climate where visitors can spend a pleasant holiday, thanks to the wide selection of good hotels and the variety and quality of the cuisine, mostly based on fresh fish, to be sampled in the town's restaurants. For lovers of the sea, to the North of the town lies the splendid beach of Sant'Agostino and, to the South, the cliffs and the tourist harbour of Riva di Traiano, one of the most modern and best equipped on the Tyrrhenian coast. Lying as it does in the centre of the Etruscan country, there is ample possibility for making excursions inland. No one should miss the remains of the Taurine Baths, a site covering about 320,000 square metres, composed of an area dating back to the Republican period and another of the Empire. Other ruins are to be found at Aquae Tauri (an Etruscan-Roman centre) where there is the Spa of Ficoncella, much appreciated and used by the people of Civitavecchia. Here too, the impossibility of solving the problems of arthropathy, dermatitis and allergies with normal treatments is solved with the waters rich in sulphur and calcium, flowing at a temperature of 48 to 56°C in the baths and showers that are available free of charge. In early summer the hills all around are clothed in the beautiful purple of the flowering thistles. The Tolfa mountains offer splendid opportunities for a trip into the green country, with the characteristic little towns of Tolfa, which boasts old traditions in leather craft, and Allumiere.
