ONE NIGHT AT THE THEATRE

Among the town theatres, the most ancient one is the Teatro Comunale Giuseppe Verdi, opened on 21st April, 1801. It was built in Neoclassical style by Matteo Pertsch, who clearly drew inspiration from the Teatro alla Scala of Milan. The opera and concert season alternate in the October-May period.

In the same period, the Politeama Rossetti, which was built in Viale XX Settembre in 1878, stages a series of theatrical plays, while the same kind of activity is carried out by the "Teatro Sloveno" (Slovene Theatre) in Via Petronio for the Slovene-speaking minority group.

In the summer, the theatrical activity varies and, while the Teatro Comunale (Town Theatre) puts up the Festival dell'Operetta (Operetta Festival), performances in the open air are held in the Cortile delle Milizie in the Castello di San Giusto (San Giusto Castle).

In addition, similar or folk initiatives, though not at the same level as the above-mentioned performances, are the shows recalling the two "souls" of the town, which, as Saba says, is located "between rocky mountains and the bright sea".

Last but not least the "Settembre Musicale" (Musical September), which takes place in the Duomo di San Giusto (San Giusto's Cathedral), in the Tempio Evangelico Luterano (Lutheran Evangelic Temple) and in other churches; all concerts are at a very high level and are held in places which are notable both for their acoustics and, in particular, for their highly suggestive atmosphere.
