CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS

Procida eagerly cherishes its ancient traditions closely bound up with both the magic charms and the snares of the sea. The pagan beauty of its marine rites and the anxiety of its women waiting for the sailors' return were described by Lamartine in his novel "Graziella".

On certain traditional festivals women still wear their traditional, bright-coloured folk costumes, rich in golden trimmings and resembling Greek tunics.

Some of these costumes, having been handed down over generations, are now pieces fit for any museum.

Life in close contact with nature accounts for the profound religiousness of its people permeating century-old folklore and traditions and particularly festivals such as Good Friday with its famous Procession and the performance of "Mysteries" where this deep religious feeling, combined with inexhaustible fancy, results in the phantasmagoric view also offered by the bright colours of the vestments of the different congregations.
