FISHING

Among the traditional activities of the islanders, fishing and seafaring have always been given less importance than farming, even though the island has, especially on its northern coast many coves and beaches.
The percentage of islanders dedicated to the sea is the same today as it was centuries ago. The northern side of the island, where the coastline slopes evenly down to below sea level giving an ample platform, at places 200 meters deep, allows for coastal fishing and attracts a large number of fishermen.

Less favourable is the west coast with its sheer imposing cliffs and above all the southern side which is exposed to the open sea, where depths of 500 meters have been recorded.

The ideal fishing area is therefore Ischia Ponte, where at least half of the islands' fishermen are concentrated, with the remainder divided between the other towns, the majority at Forio followed by Sant'Angelo, Testaccio and Lacco Ameno.

The best months to fish here are May and October and in fact many fishermen in June and August leave these waters to fish temporarily elsewhere.
