THE IONIAN COAST

On the Ionian coast there are towns where the culture of Magna Graecia interweaves with that of later periods. Here we have Locri and Gerace, founded by the people of Locri in search of a refuge from Saracen raiders. Continuing northwards we come to Stilo, the origins of which go back to the period of Magna Graecia, but it is particularly linked with the Byzantine period. Then come more seaside towns: Soverato, Pietragrande, Copanello and Squillace to which, historically speaking, Roccelletta also belongs. Then Cape Rizzuto. And Le Castella, the fort built by the Aragonese against pirate raids. Known once as Castra Hannibalis, with Cape Rizzuto and Cape Nava it forms the mythical triangle of Iapygian promontories, slightly to the south of that of Lacinio, where stands the famous sanctuary dedicated to Hera. Here we skirt the sea of myth, but also farm lands with the possibility of farm tourism.
