A lovely lateral valley, tranquil and sunny. Little known but important for its natural beauty, it offers mountain lovers wonderful, timeless holidays, full of discoveries, immersed in a reserved atmosphere.
Close to Aosta, Valpelline stretches among the spectacular peaks over 4,000 metres high which mark the border with Switzerland. It is an ideal spot for holidays exposed to nature, calm, comfortable, no crowds but happy and genuine. In Valpelline there are four small winter sports resorts. Doues (1176 m.) offers attractive excursions with skis in the panoramic basin of By and easy excursions for those who like climbing with their skis, whilst to learn downhill skiing.
Valpelline (1022 m.), the valley's principal village, situated on the edge of beautiful woods, has an excellent track, ideal for learning cross-country skiing. This village has a well-known gastronomic tradition, and the delicious "Seuppa Valpellenentse" is famous.
Ollomont (1350 m.), at the foot of the Grand Combin, has successions of dense woods and calm clearings. A demanding cross-country skiing track with one illuminated circuit is ready for those who want to perfect their technique, whilst a downhill slope with programmed snow is ideal for beginners. In spring there is a wide range of paths for exciting mountaineering excursions in the By basin and, crossing the col of Fenêtre Durand, you can enter the famous "haute route" linking Chamonix to Zermatt.
Bionaz (1606 m.), situated on an extensive plateau below the rocky chain of Morion, is a resort dedicated exclusively to cross-country skiing and offers a track which thanks to its length and variety can satisfy the most demanding enthusiasts. Immersed in the nature of Valpelline you can see important historical remains, going back to when the frontier's high valleys were important for communications: towers and manors add the final evocative touch to a valley which seems timeless.
