Liguria has been described as the most beautiful and pictoresque sea front in Europe. Its central location within the old continent works to Liguria's advantage. Besides, Genoa is the region's administrative center as well as the meeting place of the two Rivieras - is right in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea.
The Ligurian coast in its whole extension (Km 342), from La Spezia to Ventimiglia, offers exceptional attractions both for the holidaymaker and the tourist: a pleasant and temperate climate, an ultra-centenarian touristic and hotel tradition, the excellent modern means of communications, the beaches capable of meeting all needs, and other relevant features - like a tasteful and refined gastronomy, several sports infrastructures, a flourishing centuries-old craftsmanship, a glorious historical past and a rich culture, besides welfare works in constant progress.
The Ligurian Riviera has a deserved good reputation thanks to its exceptionally temperate climate. The Ligurian skies do not know fogs, the Ligurian mountains and hills are rarely covered with snow, while the sun shines during almost the whole year, creating an atmosphere of eternal spring and favouring the development of a blooming vegetation mostly consisting of olive-trees, cypress-trees, palms, chestnut-trees, pinasters, and a wide range of exotic flowers and plants.
The average temperature from November to February is around 11°; from March to May it reaches 20°; in July and August it is around 25° and it lowers at 19° in September and October.
The centenarian traditions of Ligurian tourism are particularly consolidated at Sanremo, Alassio, Bordighera, Portofino, Portovenere, Rapallo, towns which offer a very confortable resort also thanks to a long hotel activity and to high-level professional experiences.
Liguria alone, despite its limited territorial area, absorbs 13% of the national touristic movement, with the main seaside towns and with its beautiful hinterland.
30% of the touristic movement in Liguria is constituted by foreigners influx. The lines of communications connecting Genoa and Liguria to the main national and foreign centres are of international importance. They consist of modern highways, railways and maritime junctions, besides airlines leading to the international airport "Cristoforo Colombo".
The two Rivieras beaches can meet all likings: beaches with golden sand in the Riviera di Ponente (western Riviera), with Savona and Imperia provinces; other seaside towns with rocky sand, like the romantic Cinque Terre (in La Spezia province) and the coasts of most of Genoa province.
The coast is full of touristic villages, campings and touristic ports and landings.
Among the regional noteworthy features there is the famous local gastronomy, with the sauce called "pesto" (made of sweet basil, olive-oil, salt, garlic, Parmesan and Pecorino cheese - all is squashed and amalgamated well). This sauce is to be added to the delicious local pastas and to make the famous "minestrone" tasty.
Among the famous dishes there is the "buridda", cooked with fishes and spicy ingredients, the "Pasqualina cake", made of a delicate puff pastry filled with beets, artichokes, eggs and parmesan, etc. Among the natural ingredients constituting the basis of the Ligurian cooking there are: sweet basil, sage, parsley, onion, olive-oil, etc.
